The Logan Turnpike trail is located in the the Raven Cliffs Wilderness of the Chattahoochee National Forest in North Georgia. It connects with the Appalachian Trail at Tesnatee Gap, mile 37.4 from Springer Mountain. The trail follows a portion of the route of a historic wagon road between Cleveland and Blairsville, originally known as the Union Turnpike. The route was abandoned in about 1922 when the paved road through Neel’s Gap was opened. Today, the trail follows along Town Creek through some beautiful and remote wilderness. An in-and-out hike of about 4 miles total, the upper portion is steep. The overall hike is generally considered of moderate difficulty with some wet areas.
Of historical significance, John Muir is believed to have taken the route during his travels in the fall of 1867, as described in A Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf.
The trail is only open from Tesnatee Gap. The south trailhead was open until a few years ago but is now gated closed by a landowner.
The Logan Turnpike trail is maintained by the Lumpkin Coalition. Please let us know if you would like to join us!
